There’s Always Room for Two on a Bench

takemetoalbion:

Will found himself unable to take the stuffy library any longer. Even though he wasn’t done picking out course reading, he couldn’t take it. He needed out of the place that was kind of dusty and had that old book smell that was beginning to burn his nose whenever he tried to breathe in. He checked out the book that he had grabbed, tucked it under his arm, and took the quickest route he knew out of the building. Once he was in the massive square, he stopped for a moment to breathe in the fresh air, his nose settling and everything just felt a little easier. He looked up under the sky, which in a place so foreign to him still, was like a security blanket. Because no matter where he was or how many miles away he was, his family was still tucked under that very same sky.

He started walking again, eyes fixed in front of him, walking past the everything that was found on their small campus. It still amazed him, and what amazed him more was how easy this all seemed for everyone else, while he felt like he was struggling to get things quite right. It was like the entire school was in on the same club, and he was allowed in the club, he just didn’t know when the meetings were.

He found a nice bench to sit on, where he cracked open his book. Upon opening it he could smell the library again and he looked up for a second, letting the aged book air out a little bit before he was going to bury his nose in it. He made a mental note to check with someone when the next football game was,  because as much as he liked his solitude, everything was lulling, and while it was a quiet and hard life—studying, being a hermit—it was also a bit mundane.

Freya found herself wandering around the campus, smiling a little bit as she let the warm, summer sun nestle itself into her skin. It was a lovely day and she really enjoyed that it gave her a nice chance to get a walk in.

As she made her way around the campus, she stopped at the bench and she debated whether she had it in herself to overcome her shyness for once and ask if she could share it with the boy who was reading the book. Come on, Freya. You can do it. She looked at the boy on the bench before biting down on her lip and stepping over to him.

“Excuse me,” she started in a quiet voice. “Is…can I sit here?”

Merlin walked briskly to the entrance, where he was supposed to meet Freya 15 minutes ago. Shitshitshit. He broke into a run, swiftly going back to walking when he saw Freya standing there, looking anxiously at her watch.

Freya looked up from her watch. Where is he? Did I get the time wrong? Her thoughts disappated the second she saw Merlin walking towards her and a tiny, relieved smile graced her features. “Hi, Merlin.” The familiar feelings of her crush were rising up in her but she pushed the feelings back because, well, this wasn’t a date. Was it?

Merlin’s heart spluttered when he saw her, forgetting just how beautiful she was. He felt his hands going clammy, and wiped them on his jeans quickly before he put a hand out for her to hold. “I didn’t keep you waiting too long, did I?”

Freya shook her head quickly, smiling a little bit more as she watched Merlin extend his hand. “No, not at all.” Quietly, she slid her hand into his and her heart fluttered a little bit. Well maybe she had been wrong. Hopefully, she had been wrong.

He heard a slight shake in her voice, and smiled. “Did anyone tell you you’re cute when you’re nervous?” She flushed bright red and he decided to let the teasing go. Until they reached the coffee shop anyway. They began to make their way through the throng of students, all eager to go out for lunch. “How was your day?”

Freya could still feel the heat in her face as they walked through the crowd. Anything that Merlin could say to compliment her even in the slightest bit was going to make her like this, and she had a feeling that it was going to happen a lot during this outing. “It’s been pretty good so far,” she admitted with a smile, the redness finally fading. “How about yours?”

“It’s been okay, I guess. I’m still trying to get used to sharing a room Arthur. His mood can change in the snap of a finger. But he’s alright, underneath it all.” He rubbed his thumb along the inside of her hand, looking down at her.

“When am I going to get to watch you at cheer practise?”

OOC: I have to go to bed :c

Freya bit back a slight smile as she looked at Merlin. “Well, it’s good that you two are trying to make it work alright instead of being enemies or something like that, right?” She paused just to make sure that she wasn’t talking too much.

At the mentions of cheer practise her smile broke free. “Uh…whenever you’d like to, I suppose,” she told him as she turned a slight red again.

“How about tomorrow?” He didn’t want to come across as too eager, but the less time he spent in his dorm room, the better.

Freya couldn’t stop smiling. “Tomorrow sounds good,” she told him, making a mental note to do her very best at practise the next day. This was exciting.

Merlin grinned back at her, squeezing her hand a little. “Come on, let’s go get that coffee before lunch is over.”

“That would make sense, wouldn’t it?” Freya returned the squeeze for lack of a better thing to do. This was really such a great feeling that was welling up inside of her, and she was glad that Merlin actually wanted something to do with her.

Maybe her thoughts were getting ahead of her but she had a really good feeling about this.
